Low back and pelvis

The lumbar spine has five vertebrae. The pelvis consists of two large bones which oscillate with the sacrum* when we walk.

The pelvis represents the foundations for the whole spine to balance on. It can be misaligned by a fall on to your bottom or knees, sitting badly for extensive periods of time, lifting at an awkward angle, during pregnancy and labour and when you have pain in any joint of the lower limb- hip, knee, ankle or foot making you walk with a limp.

Imbalances can cause sprain in the ligaments*, discs* or muscles used to support and move the spine and pelvis.

Injuries here can lead to back and leg pain. When the lumbar vertebrae or discs move out of place they can pinch on the nerves as they exit between the vertebrae of the spine from the spinal cord to supply the leg. This can give rise to leg pain, pins and needles, and numbness or muscle weakness commonly known as sciatica.
